After a decade of dedicated work and collaboration across multiple divisions, Code Enforcement is proud to announce the successful closure of a code case located at 1 Bridge St. This commercial property had multiple health and safety violations, rendering the property unsafe. The property has long functioned as a storage facility, but it was forced to close because of significant health and safety issues.

Through the use of a compliance agreement, this once severely blighted property has been transformed into a fully operational self-storage facility now operated by Best Box Salinas, in partnership with Extra Space Storage, providing more than 425 secure storage units to the Salinas community.

What is a Compliance Agreement?

A compliance agreement is a formal arrangement between a property owner and the City designed to address and resolve violations of local municipal codes, such as construction without permits; accumulation of junk, debris, or other materials; overgrown weeds; structures that are deteriorated or unsafe; and/or illegal dumping.

Through this agreement, the City works collaboratively with the property owner to identify corrective actions and establish a reasonable timeline for bringing the property into compliance with City codes. These agreements provide property owners with the opportunity to voluntarily correct issues to avoid more immediate enforcement measures. Salinas’ Code Enforcement Officers conduct follow-up inspections and provide guidance throughout the process to ensure progress is being made and deadlines being met.

If the required corrections are not completed within the agreed timeframe, the city may pursue additional legal actions, such as fines, liens, or receivership actions, to address the violations.

Why is this important?

This project reflects the City’s commitment to improving neighborhoods and keeping the public safe.

With this milestone behind us, the City of Salinas Code Enforcement Division is ready to move forward— continuing to strengthen and protect the community.

We would like to thank every division involved in this process and their commitment to see this through.
