When vehicles park too close to a crosswalk (marked and unmarked), it makes it hard for drivers to see pedestrians entering a crosswalk, oncoming bicycles, and vehicle traffic. Pedestrians and bicyclists are particularly vulnerable.

Under Assembly Bill 413 (AB 413), the City of Salinas prohibits stopping, standing, or parking a vehicle

  • Within 20 feet of the approach side of any marked or unmarked crosswalk.

  • Within 15 feet of a crosswalk where a specialized curb extension is present.

To officially enforce these safety zones, the Salinas City Council approved a Resolution updating local parking citations and incorporating the Daylighting Law violation penalty into the city's active parking schedule. As a result of this vote, drivers will now face a citation if they park within the restricted area identified by AB 413.
