Recycling 101: How to Recycle Right in Salinas

Published on May 28, 2026

A blue Republic Services recycling bin sits on a concrete driveway in front of a brick house.

As a community, everyone in Salinas plays a crucial role in preserving our environment. By separating recyclables correctly at home, we keep materials out of local landfills and waterways. Placing the wrong items in your blue cart causes contamination, so remember when in doubt, throw it out! Follow these quick guidelines to keep Salinas clean and green.

Close the Lids

Ensure all recycling and waste materials fit in your carts with the lids closed.

Empty. Clean. Dry.

Keep all recyclables free of food and liquid. Make sure all recyclables have been emptied, rinsed, and patted dry. Dirty items will interfere with the recycling process.

Don't Bag It

Never put recyclables in containers or bags. Your recyclable items should be placed loose in the cart.

Only place these items in the recycling cart:

  • Cardboard

  • Paper

  • Metal Cans

  • Plastic Bottles and Jugs

NEVER Place These Items in the Recycling Cart:

  • Plastic Bags & Wrappers

  • Soiled Paper

  • Styrofoam

  • Construction Waste

  • Electronics & Batteries

  • Greasy Pizza Boxes

  • Clothing & Shoes

  • Yard Waste

  • Diapers

  • Scrap Metal

  • Medical Waste

  • Food

  • Toys

  • Tools

Remember: when in doubt, throw it out! Working together, we can ensure a cleaner and greener Salinas!
