Closter Park: Where Community, Culture, and History Come Together

For generations, Closter Park has been much more than a park in Salinas. It’s been a gathering place, a recreation hub, and an important part of East Salinas. Named after the Closter family who owned the land as early as the 1920s, Closter Park was originally part of a larger property known as Rancho El Sausal, located in the heart of what we know today as the Alisal.  

On October 24, 1977, the City Council approved the construction of a recreation building at Closter Park, which was later leased to the Salinas Boxing Club in 2007. The Salinas Boxing Club has remained an ongoing partner with the City at Closter Park, along with the Salinas National Little League who has called Closter Park home for the last 75 years.  

Over the years, Closter Park has truly become a community space, invested in, cared for, and used by all. There were five Salinas Rotary Clubs, three international rotaries, and donors who came together in 2012 to build a plazita and "kiosko" (gazebo) as a gathering place and nod to our Hispanic culture in the heart of the Alisal. The plazita has become a true landmark of Closter Park and the Alisal.  

After extensive community outreach and critical funding from the State through California's Proposition 68 Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program (Prop 68), along with American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and City funding, we have reached a monumental milestone for our historic park!  

As a community, we will celebrate the newly renovated park with a day of food, music, activities, community resources, and family-friendly fun. The celebration will also mark the five-year anniversary of AMOR Salinas, the City's beautification and community engagement movement focused on cleaning, greening, engagement, and equity.
